History

The idea of a “buying group” to help independent newspaper companies gain the pricing similar to the large publicly owned companies, was hatched in 1983 at a meeting of newspaper owners and friends – Pete Eyerly, Bloomsburg (PA) Press Enterprise; Joe Smyth, Independent Newspapers – including Dover, DE and several non-dailies in FL and AZ; and Chuck Berky, a recent owner/Publisher of The Reporter (Lansdale, PA) and Gannett Executive.

The time was ripe for the founders of PAGE to call on other key friends and associates in the newspaper industry to pool their resources and purchasing volumes to start the cooperative.

PAGE members now comprise the largest purchasing entity in the newspaper industry.

Members include almost three-quarters of the independent daily newspapers and a combined daily circulation of over 11,000,000. Annual purchases exceed $200,000,000 and new members and suppliers are being added.

Newspaper and Movable Type

With the help of a passionate Advisory Committee, 10 family-owned newspaper companies, and several dedicated advising professionals, PAGE opened for business on April 1st, 1984. Early supporting suppliers included Hoosier Photo Supply (HPS), Anocoil, Tembec and General Printing Ink.

The early years brought continuous, but fairly slow growth. It took 10 years for the Cooperative to reach its goal of $50 million in annual purchases, but from then on, the increase in membership, purchasing volume and numbers of suppliers started to mushroom to reach the gigantic size it is today.

As the newspaper industry changes to a variety of platforms for delivery of their information products, PAGE is changing and evolving along with its members. It is also taking advantage of its large network and expanding its services to include revenue-producing suppliers that will further help the financial health of its membership.
